smuggling $134,000,000,000 (updated)

Some days ago I found this strange story about two men trying to smuggle bonds worth 134 billion US dollars across the Italian-Swiss border. Or maybe it was fake bonds? Everything about this case seems quite mysterious to me.

Media coverage is strangly spotty, but summaries are published by the online editions of the Times and the German newspaper Die Welt (which I don't normally read). Of course there are also lots of conspiracy theories.

Update: It transpires that the bonds were fakes.
